CoalMiser is produced by Microtex Products Ltd, a specialist metal fibre manufacturer based in Nottingham.

And the beginnings of CoalMiser? Well, a combination of scientific endeavour and cutting edge technology developed on both sides of the Atlantic – but what really brought the unique properties of CoalMiser to light was the observations of one individual who simply noticed that his coal didn’t seem to burn as quickly when he placed an early version of Microtex’s fibres on the grate of his fire.

The implications of this on cash savings, on reduced carbon emissions, even on a possible reduced need to sweep chimneys, excited us and we wanted to find out more.

Many of the properties of Microtex fibres have been fully utilised before – we created parts of the launch pads for Challenger rockets, withstanding and conducting the intense heat at take-off, and we’re well known within the automotive exhaust market where the same fibre technology is used to manufacture the high temperature baffles.

So, keen to quantify the savings that the Microtex fibre was making, we invited Nottingham University to conduct independent tests to measure what effect the fibre was having on the rate at which coal burns.

Their intensive tests have confirmed a massive 30% reduction in the amount of coal needed. So we’ve perfected the fibre and created CoalMiser - it does exactly what it says, it’s miserly with your coal, and it saves you money – for an average home which burns coal regularly, CoalMiser will save you hundreds of pounds because you’ll be using almost one third less coal for the same great fire.
